The man active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone DHA. DHA is made from natural sugar cane and when extracted, the cane is golden in appearance. Not until the cane sugar is ‘refined’, then the sugars extracted within the cane, turns white. When fake tan is manufactured there is a perfect blend of DHA and added colourants.
Most fake tanning products contain colourants and vary depending upon the company’s budget. These colourants can be seen on application, to assist the technician (professional or home application) as to where they have applied the fake tan products, on their skin. As well as, colourants are also added to normally counteract the natural DHA appearance.
There are a number of factors as to the reasons why fake tans turn orange. One of the main reasons is because some companies choose to add very minimal quantities, if any, to the end fake tanning product. This is because the colourants added are extremely expensive, even from the manufactures point of view.
That all being said about the high expense value in colourants, price of the product does not always reflect the quality of the product.
