Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, both fake spray tanning and tanning foams are very safe. The best tanning lotions contain main active ingredient known as Dihydroxyacetone or DHA.
DHA was first discovered in the 1920’s and is approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: DHA and other added ingredients within tanning solutions may cause certain irritation to some individuals. We always recommended a preliminary patch test by applying a small amount of product to your skin. Wait 24 hrs to assess if the product is compatible for the individual.

The main active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. DHA is derived from natural sugars and reacts with the amino acids, proteins (Keratin) within the skin. DHA does not penetrate any further than the top out layer of the epidermis (skin) known as Stratum Corneum. To fully understand how fake tanning works, you first need to understand what the product is applied to, “The skin”.
Our skin has 2 main layers: Dermis (meaning hidden skin) and the epidermis (meaning above). There are 5 layers for the epidermis and each layer (stratum) has their own function and purpose. Starting from the outermost layer:
Stratum Corneum- Horny,
Stratum Lucidum,
Stratum Granulosum- Granular,
Stratum Spinosum- Spiny and
Stratum and Stratum Basale which is the deepest layer before the dermis.
These 5 layers of the epidermis are constantly transitioning to the next upper level for the skin to renew and exfoliate naturally. Just like every person’s finger print is different, so too is the rate of movement for the skin cells to transform from one layer to the next. The speed or rate in which the epidermis transforms and renews is generally 7 to 10 days but may vary dependant on diet, age, environment etc. Other than certain formulated ingredients within some fake tanning products, the rate in which the skin renews is the primary factor towards determining the longest lasting tan achievable.
When we naturally tan from ultraviolet sunlight, our epidermis absorbs this light and penetrates to the deepest layer, Stratum Basale or Basal layer. The melatonin (pigment) held within this epidermis Basal layer produce melanocytes, which in turn create darker pigments. Whereas, when we apply fake tan on the skin, the tan only adheres to the Corneum Horny layer, giving temporary 7- 10 days results. This method of fake tanning has been endorsed worldwide as a safe and effective temporary tanning result.

Always read the back of product pack indication of timing and development recommendations.
The main active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. DHA is derived from natural sugars and reacts with the amino acids, proteins (Keratin) within the skin. The longer the DHA remains with the amino acids and proteins within the skin, the greater the tanning result, hence the longevity of the tan.

The main active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone or DHA and this ingredient is colourless. After the individuals chosen development timing is completed and rinsed off, the colourless DHA is left to process and adheres to the amino acids & proteins within the skin. This is known as the Maillard effect.
DHA approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Some fake tanning products are colourless, but most tanning companies add colourants to assist the technician or consumer with their application. On average 92% of those who choose to use a fake tan, have an event the following day. The colourants (Green, Ash, Violet or Natural) within that particular product that the consumer has applied, will normally be evident on the event. Therefore, if the individual applies a green based sunless tan, they should expect a green based result the following day.
Unfortunately, some users have the opinion that fake tan colourants such as green, ash (blue) or violet may counteract the ‘orange’ that can appear in fake tanning products. Sundance The Designer Tan believes that the best fake tan should always remain natural in appearance and compliment the skin tone (warm base or cool base skin tone).

Please read FAQ’s: How does fake tanning work?

Fake tans generally last between 7 -10 days.

Here are 10 top tips on how to best get the longest lasting tan;

  1. Prior to the application of your fake tan, shave and gently exfoliate the skin’s surface ensuring that you focus on your knees, ankles, toes, elbows, heels and any other calcified or rough areas on your body.

  2. Stay out of the sun. Your fake tan is not a protectant against the sun’s harsh UVA/ UVB rays. The sun causes skin damage and will generate faster transformations of your skins wanting to renew its cells, reducing a long-lasting tan.

  3. Environmental issues such as swimming (chlorine, salt or natural), air conditioning (dryness), sunbaking, will reduce the longevity of your fake tan.

  4. Hydrate your body. Drink water, and then drink some more. Evidence shows that when we drink more water our skin changes for the positive.

  5. Moisturise your skin daily.

  6. Eat healthy.

  7. Avoid alkaline ph based soaps. Microfibre by itself is amazing for gently and effectively cleansing the skin without drying or irritating the skin.

  8. Avoid wash your skin too often. Over cleaning the skin shreds away the natural ph of the skin which will in turn affect the fake tan.

  9. Avoid smoking – easier said than done I’ve been told, but direct and passive smoking has a detrimental effect on your skin.

  10. Wear loose-style clothing wherever possible. Anything abrasive against the skin is, well, abrasive.

1. Avoid deodorants or powders or any other additional fragrances applied to the skin’s surface.
2. Prior to the application of your fake tan, shave and gently exfoliate the skin’s surface ensuring that you focus on your knees, ankles, toes, elbows, heels and any other calcified or rough areas on your body. However, if you have sensitive skin, prepare 24 hours earlier to reduce any skin sensitivities.
3. Most tanning applications are applied nude to reduce the effects of uneven tanning lines caused from underwear or other items of clothing. After the application of your tan, it is recommended that you wear loose style underwear (such as boxer shorts) or simply arrive/leave ‘Commando style.
4. Hydrate your body. Drink water, and then drink some more. Evidence shows that when we drink more water our skin changes for the positive.
5. Moisturise your skin daily. However, on the day of your fake tan only moisturise your knees, ankles, toes, elbows, heels and any other calcified or rough areas on your body.
6. Eat healthy.
7. Avoid alkaline PH based soaps. Microfibre by itself is amazing for gently and effectively cleansing the skin without drying or irritating the skin.
8. Avoid smoking – easier said than done I’ve been told, but direct and passive smoking has a detrimental effect on your skin.
9. Wear loose-style clothing wherever possible. Anything abrasive against the skin is, well, abrasive.
10. To reduce splash up, empty your bladder before the fake tan is applied and dry the areas thoroughly.

The main active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. DHA is colourless and odourless and adheres to the amino acids & proteins within the skin. The cause of the odour is the reaction between the DHA and amino acids and proteins within the skin. This is known as the Maillard effect.
Sundance The Designer Tan has formulated to significantly reduce odours by counteracting the Maillard effect with our unique signature blend of fragrances including Pina Colada.

Wear loose-style clothing wherever possible. Anything abrasive against the skin is, well, abrasive. Avoid heavy clothing that may cause you to sweat. Always try to keep the skin cool while processing to avoid sweat marks.
Most tanning applications are applied nude to reduce the effects of tanning lines caused from underwear or other items of clothing. After the application of your tan, it is recommended that you wear loose style underwear (such as boxer shorts) or simply leave ‘Commando style’.

Yes. However fake tans do not provide any sun protection and always remember to wear Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30+ whenever you can.

Water is a natural abrasive exfoliant to the skin’s surface whether it be chlorine, salt water, tap water, etc. The longer the individual remains in the water, the more the fake tan will fade, reducing the longevity of the fake tan.

There is no evidence that suggests any harmful effects of fake tanning during pregnancy.
DHA is approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
