Why do Fake Tans turn blotchy

When fake tan is applied to the skin, the DHA within the fake tan adheres to the proteins within the skin known as amino acids.  In some cases, certain skin types have very little amino acids within certain parts of their bodies, and the DHA is unable to show a tanned result, after processing.

We conducted a study from various participants to see if diet was a factor to consider, as to the reason why DHA did not adhere to the skin.  Interestingly, the participants who were celiac or vegan were less likely produce an even all-round fake tan, than those who had an omnivorous diet.

However, within this study, we did not account for a number of other factors such as age, heritage, environment.  These mentioned could also be contributing factors as to why DHA does not effectively adhere to the skin.

The man active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone DHA.  DHA is made from natural sugar cane and when extracted, the cane is golden in appearance. Not until the cane sugar is ‘refined’, then the sugars extracted within the cane, turns white.  When fake tan is manufactured there is a perfect blend of DHA and added colourants.
