One coat or Two coats – That is the Question?
There is a misconception that many hold and that is, when applying more than 1 application, it would offer a darker fake tan. This statement could not be further from the truth! Here’s how:
I get asked this question by technicians and customers all the time; Is one coat enough or should I be applying two coats?
From the professional technician’s point of view, I would always recommend doing two coats to ensure that “no stone is left untouched”. Meaning every part of the body is covered. Although the technician uses just as much spray tan liquid as the first application, a second coat will ensure that there is less room for complaint. Plus, majority of the customers wouldn’t honestly mind paying for the extra spray application.
From a home application point of view, I would recommend that if you are a novice at fake tan applications, continue applying until you have a rhythm as to how to best apply the fake tan to your skin. If you’re well versed at self- tan applications, you’ll know exactly what suits your own skins absorption rate.
The man active ingredient within all fake tanning products is known as Dihydroxyacetone DHA. DHA is made from natural sugar cane and when extracted, the cane is golden in appearance. Not until the cane sugar is ‘refined’, then the sugars extracted within the cane, turns white. When fake tan is manufactured there is a perfect blend of DHA and added ingredients, to nurture the skin.
The percentage amount of DHA added into every fake tanning product determines the end result. Even if the technician or the customer desired a darker fake tan by adding an additional coating, this could not be possible due to the percentage already determined within the fake tan product.
