What is the purpose of a moisturiser? And, can a moisturiser reduce wrinkles to give me a more youthful appearance?

Whenever I see large companies promoting their “perfect moisturiser” with the promising temptation to reverse time, I’m taken back to the Spielberg/Lucas movie – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

In the movie, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and cast Elsa (Alison Doody), Dr. Henry Jones (Sean Connery) and Walter Donovan (Julian Glover), were on a quest to find the find the Holy Grail.  – A cup that promises eternal youthfulness/life.  The beautiful yet very manipulative Elsa, chose a cup for Walter Donovan, which in the end he paid the price and dies.  I wont ruin the ending for you.

Choosing the right moisturiser is honestly not a life-or-death decision, but if you’re anything like me, you’d have a bathroom cabinet full of ‘perfect moisturisers’ with the promise of a more youthful appearance.

What is the purpose if a moisturiser? And, can a moisturiser reduce wrinkles to give me a more youthful appearance?

Our skin has 3 main layers: Dermis (meaning hidden skin), the Epidermis (meaning above) and the Hypodermis (foundation). To briefly the Epidermis as it is the part:  There are 5 layers for the Epidermis and each layer (stratum) has their own function and purpose. Starting from the outermost layer:

• Stratum Corneum- Horny,
• Stratum Lucidum,
• Stratum Granulosum- Granular,
• Stratum Spinosum- Spiny and
• Stratum and Stratum Basale which is the deepest layer before the dermis.

The layer underneath the Epidermis is known as the Dermis (the papillary Dermis and the reticular Dermis).  Within the Dermis contains collagen & elastin known as Fibroblasts, which helps the Dermis thick and supportive overall skin structure.  All of your connective tissues, nerve endings, sweat glands, oil glands and hair follicles exist in your Dermis.  Fibroblasts are the principal component of the Dermis and is found in abundance.

Fibroblasts allows for stretching and recoiling of fibres to bounce back into its original shape. Over time, these fibroblasts lose their tension and sag in appearance, which gives the skin the aging effect.

There are two factors to consider when choosing an anti-aging moisturiser; External and internal factors.  Your skin is your largest organ, and it’s also the one that’s most on show for everyone to see.  So, how do we keep our largest organ in the best shape possible?

1). Internal: Eat healthy nutritious foods – the types of foods that assist in cell production. Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage, Bok choy, garden cress & Brussel sprouts (yes, Brussel sprouts) are some of the best foods for stem cell growth. These vegetables boots enzymes in the liver, that counteract harmful toxins we might digest or breathe in.

2). Internal: Hydrate your body, drink plenty of water and then drink some more – at least 2.5 litres per day. Studies have shown that water hydrates the skin and help it to maintain its elasticity.

3). External: Moisturise your skin with Hydasoft Daily Moisturiser. Using a fine moisturiser without SPF will absorb into the skin faster. Avoid moisturisers that are thick and sit on the top of your skin. These types of moisturisers will make your skin sweat, enlarge your skin pores and inevitably leaving the skin with an aged appearance. The moisturiser should be infused with ingredients to act as the collagen replacement.

4). External to internal: Avoid smoking – easier said than done I’ve been told, but direct and passive smoking has an effect on your skin.  People who smoke decrease blood flow and have fewer Fibroblasts, compared to those who don’t smoke.

5). External: Use gentle 5.5-6.5 acid-based PH soaps or cleansers and avoid alkaline soaps. Microfiber by itself is amazing for gently and effectively cleansing the skin without drying or irritating the skin. Most soaps are alkaline based which are too harsh and strip the skin.

6). Internal: Learn about gut health and microbiome health. Put this information into action.  The term “gut microbiome” refers specifically to the microorganisms living in your intestines. A person has about 300 to 500 different species of bacteria in their digestive tract. While some microorganisms are harmful to our health, many are incredibly beneficial and even necessary to a healthy body. Amazing benefits to gut health all round.

7). External to internal: Exercise stimulates the heart, increasing vessels and blood supply, increasing oxygen to the skin.

8). External: Avoid the sun wherever possible. Recently, it was suggested that Australians were not receiving enough Vitamin D from the sun because of our interactions with screen time. I can understand that comment if Australians remained underground for a while.  However, in contrast to this suggestion, based on the skin cancer rates in Australia, we must be receiving ample sun already.

9).
