Recently, I was given an image of the application of a customer’s/ Technician’s fake tan. Her message read:
“I’ve applied the Cool level 5 darkest spray tan today and I love, love, love the colour choices. My clients are really happy too. Great results all round! I want to know why does the fake tan need to be sticky though”?
….And because I enjoy challenges that helps me develop in understanding my field a little bit more, I decided to conduct further investigations. So here’s what I found!
Stickiness: For fake tanning lotions to connect to your amino acids in your skin, there must be an element of stickability or commonly known as adhesiveness. However, in saying that, the natural Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) responsible for fake tanning your skin will automatically connect to your amino acids, the tan will only last a few days not that week or so that people prefer.
Longevity: Substantially reducing the stickability (humectants) within the tanning lotions jeopardises the longevity of the fake tan. Like most consumers, you want your fake tanning lotions to last, hence value for money. However, due to the very high DHA levels that everyone seems to be attracted to, regardless of how natural or unnatural looking the fake tan will appear, there seems to be a paradox between not wanting to feel sticky but wanting the fake tanning solution to stick.
DHA levels: Most companies will not disclose their DHA % within their products. Sundance the Designer Tan is full disclosure/ transparent, as I believe this will educate the user (Customer and or Technician) on how to accurately chose the right level natural DHA for their own skin. To give you an example in understanding the uses of natural DHA, the higher the use of DHA the darker the fake tan solution. Hence the more expensive the solution is for the technician to purchase. Interestingly and now obvious to me, because natural DHA is made from natural sugars, the higher amounts of natural DHA used, the stickier the fake tanning solution. Fake tanning lotions can cannot be changed by technician nor manufacturer. DHA in nature is extremely sticky.
